Can you name the candidates?

Here's an election trivia quiz for you. If you like, dig out a sheet or two of paper, and write out your answers. (1) Complete the following presidential and VP hopeful first names with the right last names and their political parties. Howard, Dick, Patrick, Al, Nat, John, Winona, Harry, Ezola, J., Joe, Art, Ralph and George.

(2) To these first names, add the last names of California's U.S. Senate candidates and their parties. Joe, Diane, Tom, Brian, Gail, Dianne, Medea. (3) To these first names, add last names of congressional candidates and their parties. Mike, Tom, Barbara, Rifkin.

(4) To these first names, add the last names and political parties of these Assembly candidates. Paul, Steven, Lou and Steve.

(5) If you are a Pacifican, which San Mateo County Board of Education trustee area do you probably live in?

(6) Which Harbor commissioner candidates are running as a slate?

(7) There are two harbor commissioners whose last names are Italian in origin and which start with "Pa". Name them.

(8) Name the Peninsula Health Care District candidate for director whose name also is Italian and which also starts with a "Pa". He is not running within Pacifica.

(9) Which county office is outgoing Assemblyman Ted Lempert running for, and who is his opponent?

(10) Which other office is that opponent also seeking?

(answers below)

(1) George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Republican. John Hagelin, Nat Goldhaber, Natural Law. Ralph Nader, Winona LaDuke, Green. Patrick Buchanan, Ezola Foster, Reform. Harry Browne, Art Olivier, Libertarian. Al Gore, Joe Lieberman, Democratic. Howard Phillips, J. Curtis Frazier, American Independent.

2. Jose "Joe" Camahort, Reform. Diane Templin, American Independent. Tom Campbell, Republican. Brian Rees, Natural Law. Gail Lightfoot, Libertarian. Dianne Feinstein, Democratic. Medea Benjamin, Green.

3. Mike Garza, Republican. Tom Lantos, Democratic. Barbara Less, Libertarian. Rifkin Young, Natural Law.

4. Paul Six, Reform. Steven Kassel, Republican. Lou Papan, Democratic. Steve Lundry, Libertarian.

5. Trustee area 2, represented by Beverly Gerard of Daly City. Board members are nominated from geographical divisions, but are elected county-wide, much like county supervisors.

6. Fernandez, Schultz and Linder.

7. Pietro Parravano, Leo Padreddii.

8. Frank Pagliaro.

9. San Mateo County Board of Education, trustee area 6. His opponent is Jack Hickey.

10. Hickey is the Libertarian candidate for Byron Sher's 11th district State Senate Seat.

By the way, if you're a Pacifican, you can't put yourself in as a write-in candidate for the County Board of Education seats now open. However, you're allowed to vote for the candidates for those seats. Ted Lempert has been term limited out of the assembly at the young age of 39.

Paul Azevedo will once again be spending 15 hours on election day as precinct Inspector, passing out ballots and helping Pacificans vote. When the double inspector in two Portola Valley precincts was injured, he plugged in at the last minute in the most recent gubernatorial election. He notes that traffic to Portola Valley is light at 5:15 a.m., at least on election day.
